Network marketing prospecting is more of an art than a science. This is true because a beginner can apply many of the wrong strategies and still have some success. This creates a false sense of security that often results in newbies falling prey to these 3 deadly prospecting mistakes.

1. Buying mlm leads from a lead company.

This is far and away the winner of the prospecting futility contest! The big danger is that leads are SO easy to sell. Basically, lead companies can build up the quality of their leads without a shred of proof. Most leads are purchased in bulk quantities from wholesale lead brokers. Lead brokers will typically sell the same lead to several different customers

This problem is compounded by the fact that many leads supplied their contact information for a free offer of some kind. Often, they have no interest in a business opportunity. It is not unusual to call a lead and they have no idea why you are calling them. Network marketing leads purchased from lead companies are an expensive waste of time.

Do NOT waste your money!!

2. Trying to sponsor friends and family members.

Listen, network marketing prospecting is challenging enough without alienating your “warm market.” In fact, you will find that your “warm” market can become pretty chilly when they are approached about a business opportunity. Simply because they are close to you does not mean that they were bestowed with the same entrepreneurial spirit. The best approach is to offer free samples of products that are offered by your company.

If they like your company products, they may want to hear more about your opportunity!

3. Spending time and effort prospecting unmotivated individuals.

This one is a hard lesson to learn. Some people simply lack the desire to do what it takes to start a network marketing business. The difficulty here is that people have a hard time admitting to themselves that they lack motivation. They may “string” you along for a significant period of time before you determine that they are not good candidates for your business. The key to preventing your recruiting from being a waste of your precious time is to have the prospect take initiative right away. Invite them to a company call or event, for example.

If they demonstrate initiative early in the sponsoring process, they are worth pursuing.

Because network marketing is more of an art than a science, these rules are not “written in stone.”
They are just basic guidelines for preventing futility in the sponsoring process. Paying heed to them will simply improve the efficiency of running your business.
